Posture counts

21 July 2014

Classical ballet is all about lengthening, so to achieve a dancer like posture and physique, you want to ‘think long’. Training the body to be lifted up out of the waist and extending your legs and arms takes effort in the beginning but eventually it becomes second nature to all of our Sleekers.

So how can it be achieved? Imagine you’re wearing a very expensive, heavy diamond necklace – open your shoulders out to show it off and slide your shoulder blades down your back. At the same time, draw your tummy button in and imagine someone has their hands around your waist and is lifting you up two inches – creating more space between your hips and rib cage. Don’t forget to breathe. If you hold yourself like this then you’ll move more effectively and achieve faster results.

Dancers carry themselves well both inside and outside the studio, so don’t spoil your hard work by slouching the second you finish your workout – take all that lift and length and retain that posture in your everyday life.

See you in the Sleek studio soon!
