Without self-care, by the end of the Christmas and New Year frivolities, you may be feeling a bit like the Grinch! Make time to treat yourself and maybe take advantage of all the sales. But don’t just buy any old things — look for items that can specifically help you improve your overall physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Find Time for Fitness

While your schedule may be full of fun holiday events, it’s important to make room for exercise no matter how many obligations you have to meet. Daily exercise is essential for mental, physical, and emotional health. Making room to get moving during this stressful season helps reduce any of the anxiety you might experience. Furthermore, the mood-boosting properties of little and often exercise can help you combat winter depression, also known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD).  As Lifehacker blogger Beth Skwarecki notes,  the weeks leading up to the New Year are actually “the best time to start working out.”

    • If there’s sugar in the recipe, reduce the amount by one-third.
    • Avoid white pasta and choose whole grain pasta blends instead.
    • Choose lean proteins like chicken or turkey over fatty beef or pork.
    • Use plenty of seasonings to make your soup flavorful without excess salt.
  • Always add a touch of acid to bring out other flavors in your soup.
